“ Mediation, at its core, is about empowering individuals to find their own path forward. I've seen firsthand how the traditional court system can be adversarial and draining, often leaving all parties feeling unheard. That's why I'm committed to a different approach.
As your mediator, I don't dictate answers; instead, I skillfully guide conversations to uncover the true underlying interests and concerns of everyone involved. I recognize that even in the toughest disputes, there's always an opportunity for common ground and innovative solutions. I strive to create an environment where open dialogue flourishes, enabling you to craft fair, creative, and cost-effective agreements that you can truly own.
The real power of mediation lies in putting the resolution directly in your hands, leading to more sustainable outcomes and a greater sense of closure.”
“Every conflict is an invitation to transform our relationships and grow from it.”
— Lionel LegryWith more than two decades of experience as a senior executive in both IT and HR, Lionel Legry's journey to becoming a certified mediator is a testament to his diverse and expansive career.
His extensive background, including more than a decade in senior leadership, honed a unique skill set. His IT expertise includes Agile Project Management and strategic planning, while his HR background is rooted in leading change, shaping company culture, and mentoring. Having lived in three countries, he developed a strong sense of cross-cultural awareness and a fluency in both French and English. This bilingual proficiency isn't just a side note; it's a key part of how he navigates complex situations and is what led him to the field of conflict resolution, as he excels at bridging gaps and finding common ground.
Since 2021, Lionel has also served as an Executive Partner at Cuba Restorations, a project dedicated to revitalizing the village of Cuba, NY, where he was named “Citizen of the Year” in 2022. Now, as a certified court mediator, he's channeling his extensive entrepreneurial and executive-level leadership skills, along with his unique blend of business acumen and cross-cultural understanding, into the art of mediation.
After my master's degree in London, I moved to New York City. Born and raised in France, this was another confrontation with learning a new culture and way of thinking. I originally went into IT because I didn't want to deal with people, but through my extensive career and leadership opportunities, I realized that no great work can be realized without a team.
Leading a team means inspiring them, supporting them, and solving their conflicts. I realized my cross-cultural background helped me understand different points of view easily, and I was able to translate viewpoints just as I translate languages. When my company went through a major transformation, I moved into HR and realized that solving conflicts was one of the most important skills in leadership. It became clear that helping people bridge their differences was where I was meant to be.
Despite the prominence of litigation in the United States, the vast majority of civil cases are now resolved outside a traditional courtroom, often through settlements facilitated by mediation. Though still classified as an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), mediation is becoming more mainstream. It represents a significant shift from a “winner-takes-all” mindset to a “win-win” settlement, where relationships don't have to be destroyed in the process.
Every conflict we face in life is rich with positive and negative potential. It can be a source of inspiration, enlightenment, learning, transformation, and growth–or rage, fear, shame, entrapment, and resistance. The choice is not up to our opponents, but to us, and our willingness to face and work through them.
— Kenneth Cloke and Joan Goldsmith A conflict is never about the surface issue. It is about the ones unsaid, untreated and unhealed wounds.
